Hydrangea macrophylla cultivation notes: Shrubby Hydrangeas prefer a humus rich soil which is well drained, ideally in half or full sun. Plant in sheltered locations away from cold winds. Cut weak stems / flower heads in spring. Best planted neutral / acid soils, mulch yearly with compost.

Plant Strengths: Sun loving drought tolerant plant; Attractive autumn colour; All round tough plant suitable for problem areas; Suitable for container growing; Suitable for exposed coastal planting; Tolerates full sun and sandy,  drought-prone soils.

Pyracantha coccinea

Firethorn (Pyracantha coccinea) is native within a range extending from southern Europe to Caucasus Mountains in western Asia.

Pyracantha is not particular about soil type and requires little or no supplemental fertilization.
Full sun light is preferred but will grow in partial to fairly heavy shade. Flowering and fruiting will not be as heavy.
Keep the plant moist to very dry in a well drained soil.
Propagation is by hardwood cuttings.

Potentilla fruticosa Gibson's Scarlet

As it's name suggests, Gibson's Scarlet is a deep scarlet red, another potentilla which stands out from the crowd.

Sometimes called 'Cinquefoil', Potentillas are excellent deciduous shrubs for the small or large garden. Almost totally free from disease and pest, they are compact plants requiring only minimal pruning to keep them to the shape and size you want. They require very little maintenance once established, yet they produce a mass of flowers from June to October.

The flowers come in shades of yellow, cream, white, orange and even red. The leaves are a mass of tiny green fingers which are attractive in their own right.

Viburnum "Dawn" Viburnum species x bodnantense

The Common Name Viburnum of the Genus Viburnum and Species x bodnantense, this Cultivar is  'Dawn'
It is an ideal plant for the Beginner.
It likes Full sun or a Partial shaded site in the garden.
A very Hardy evergreen plant that likes a well-drained light and Moist soil type.
Height: 300cm
Spread: 200cm
Time to take cuttings is in June to August but not from budded stems
Flowering period: Late September to March

The seldom seen Viburnum. grandiflorum crossed with the award-winning fragrant species Viburnum. farreri produced this lovely hybrid in the 1930s. It is characterised by its numerous and densely packed 7.5cm (3in) clusters of rose, pink or blush white blooms, appearing in winter and very sweetly scented. In cold gardens bushes flower from January to March, but in mild winters they bloom from late September to March with a short break. 'Dawn' is the form usually grown, a large shrub which eventually needs thinning, but harder pruning will keep it compact. To propagate, take cuttings in summer.
The Royal Horticultural Society has given it its Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
